Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that gives financial support to people in the construction industry who endured life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors various recipients with a grant and this year the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, raised in Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the function of his left arm and it left his left leg seriously impaired, causing foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors were concerned that he would eventually be permanently in a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their sole source of income, resulting in financial pressure on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help people in Adil’s situation walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, a professional at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the wonderful grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
