How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent duty as your furnace prepares to heat your space.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t operating the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will show you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
