Here's What to Do When Your Furnace Won't Ignite

February 23, 2017

We are making our way through the last few weeks of winter but we still have to have our furnaces, especially during cold nights. There’s not a lot that is worse than going to bed at night and realizing your furnace won’t kick on. If this happens to you, here are some things you can check yourself prior to calling Fras-Air/General Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning.

Check Air Filters

You should swap out standard air filters each month. If you don’t, they can get clogged, restricting air flow and resulting in a furnace malfunction.

Check Your Thermostat

Start by turning the thermostat up a few degrees to get the furnace to turn on. If the actual room temperature is higher than the thermostat, the heating system won’t turn on. Also, confirm the system switch is on “heat” or “auto.”

Check the Power

It may seem obvious, but make sure the power switch next to the heating system is “On.” Even gas heating equipment uses electricity so make sure the breaker has not tripped and that the power switch was not accidently moved to the “Off” position.

If you review all these things and your heating system will still not turn on, give Fras-Air/General Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call at 908-448-2154 and we’ll come out and take care of you as soon as possible.
