• No Heat. Confirm your thermostat is set to “on” and “heat.” A circuit breaker may have tripped, but in some cases it’s because the thermostat itself isn’t compatible with heat pumps.
• Insufficient heat. Poorly-maintained air filters, fan and coils can limit airflow and even cause damage to system. Swap your air filter every month or so, avoid letting the coils and fan get dirty, and get rid of yard debris that may have accumulated nearby. Your system may also have blocked air ducts, malfunctioning valves or poor refrigeration flow.
• Cold air instead of heat. Air from a heat pump may often not be as warm as a forced air furnace. But if things still feel too cold, switch the thermostat to emergency heat and at least 5 degrees above the inside temperature. If warm air is still the result, there could be an issue with your outdoor unit. Cold air means there’s probably an issue with your thermostat or air handler. The system might even have gone into defrost mode to try and stop it from freezing. If you’ve recently seen frost or ice on the outdoor coil, your HVAC system might have a faulty defroster timer or control module, or you may have a refrigerant leak, reducing the total supply.
• Heat pump starts and stops often. Change your air filter and then monitor your thermostat, as it might have to be recalibrated or it requires new batteries. If it’s cold and your system is on all the time, the thermostat could be set incorrectly. In addition, some models of heat pumps may struggle to work efficiently around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Rattling, grinding or squealing noises. If you hear a rattling sound, it might help to tighten the cover panels. But should you notice noises you’d describe as scraping, grinding, squeaking or squealing, shut the system off and get in touch with Fras-Air/General Service Experts.
